The Learning Journey: Investing in Individuals on their Path to Success

Adapting to Change:

Change. It’s a daunting word for all of us. Whether it’s facing a significant decision in our personal or professional lives, a major shift in the business landscape, or an evolution on a societal scale – the very notion of moving beyond the status quo can evoke a visceral response. Whilst it is natural to recoil at the notion of change, the past few years have emphasised the flux nature of society and modern life, and exposed the impermanence of the world we once knew. Thus, adaptability is essential for individuals and businesses to thrive. Yet, this cannot be achieved alone.

My Story:

Recently, I made the difficult decision to leave the comfort of my role as secondary teacher and join the team at Karabena Consulting. As a descendant of the Awabakal people, this was an important choice both on a personal and professional level. I have long felt an innate yearning to directly contribute to First Nations programs and initiatives, and am very fortunate for the opportunity provided by Kerry and the team. Yet, it has not come without its challenges. In many ways, I initially felt like I was beginning again. Grappling with new processes, procedures, and terminology was overwhelming. Fortunately, Karabena recognises the value of investing in people, and I am immensely grateful for the resources they devoted to support my personal and professional transition and development.

The Learning Journey:

Of course, I wasn’t naïve – I knew I was in for a steep learning curve. I’ve seen this time and time again when introducing new concepts to students. Part of the challenge was to empower young people with the tools to embrace the unknown. In the classroom we continually discussed the analogy of the ‘Learning Journey’: everyone begins their journey at different points, and with support and an open mindset we continue to follow it. Most importantly, there is no end point to our learning journey. If open, we will undertake a lifelong journey of growth. This is a concept that has helped me maintain a growth mindset during this period of change. Yet, it can’t happen alone. Just as my role as a teacher was to mentor and guide students in their learning journeys, the team at Karabena have made a concerted commitment to mentor and guide me in my learning journey. Importantly, they have provided a range of professional development opportunities to assist with my transition into the industry.

Providing Practical Support:

Recently, Karabena enrolled me in a Project Management Training Course with the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Whilst I had previous experience managing people, and planning projects in an educational setting, applying this within the business sector has largely been new. I embraced the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge I need to succeed in the industry. Through participating in this training, I have learned practical and purposeful tools and techniques to effectively manage a range of projects from the proposal phase to the execution phase. I have been equipped with the requisite concepts and terminology to ensure I can successfully contribute to the team’s project management needs. Ultimately, I have an increased confidence that alleviates the sense of overwhelm that initially correlated with my career change.

Giving Back:

Whilst I have seen first-hand how Karabena consciously seeks to capitalise on the strengths of their team members, this practical support also speaks to their desire to support staff in areas of growth. Much of my work is in consulting with First Nations peoples, but I now feel empowered to effectively manage a range of projects with my team. This will enhance our ability to broaden the scope of projects we undertake. More importantly, the investment Karabena has made in my professional development means I am even more invested in contributing to the growth of the team.

The Path to Success:

Ultimately, embracing the learning journey is our greatest tool in meeting the demands of change. Karabena’s unwavering commitment to support its employees’ professional growth ensures that we will continue to grow individually and organisationally. I’m proud to be on my path to success with the team at Karabena Consulting.
