Its purpose is to assist the Indigenous Australian Genomics Committee (the Committee) of the Commonwealth Department of Health in identifying current research, clinical services and consumer engagement activities in the genomics field that are of relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It also identifies the gaps in research, services and activities where increased attention would benefit Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Human rights law requires equal access to justice for all, including persons with disabilities. In the criminal justice system, laws regarding ‘fitness to plead’ or ‘fitness to stand trial’ raise serious concerns about accused persons with cognitive disabilities potentially being denied equal access to justice. Such laws call into play the rights to a fair trial, liberty, legal capacity and equal recognition before the law.
