Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation and Charity Strategic Planning

Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation and Charity

Who funded the project

Nalderun is an Aboriginal-led service provider to the Aboriginal community of the Mount Alexander shire in Victoria. Karabena was engaged by Nalderun to facilitate a strategic planning workshop and deliver a report of outcomes to support the development of the Nalderun Strategic Plan 2022-2025.

Over the course of a couple of weeks in March - April 2022, Nalderun facilitated a survey with staff, members of the community, program participants and partners as well as consulting with Elders, young people and the school community and families. The survey data was shared at a workshop where staff, Board members and community volunteers came together to share ideas, strategies, and opportunities. A Report was generated from these workshops, which was then used to develop the Nalderun Strategic Plan 2022–2025.

Summary

To engage internal and external stakeholders in the exploration of what Nalderun has achieved over the past three years, to bring people up to date with various streams of work in the organisation, to hear from Elders in the community and to publish a Strategic Planning Report on behalf of Nalderun.

Project Aims

The facilitator used a mixed methods approach to the strategic planning process, which involved presentations, group work, case study analysis, reflective practices and ‘blue sky’ thinking as well as developing a shared vision about priorities, opportunities, and impact.

The program was designed to be flexible to facilitate inclusive planning and forecasting activities. This approach supported participants to identify strategies to work ‘smarter’, streamline collaboration and to make insight-based decisions as to where to invest resources when implementing projects in the new Strategic Plan.

In addition, the program facilitated people’s understanding about their own personal capacity for contributing to the success of Nalderun. The combination of these activities provided a clear view of where Nalderun stands and where it is likely to be headed.

Methodologies

A report and a Strategic Plan that articulates what Nalderun does to improve community wellbeing, emphasising the importance of co-design, of Aboriginal curriculum and empowerment through participatory action.
