Development of a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and suicide prevention body

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership in Mental Health (NATSILMH) funded through the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council

Who funded the project

Karabena Consulting was engaged to facilitate workshops with various stakeholders to develop a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and suicide prevention body.

We provided the outcomes of these workshops to NATSILMH through a series of reports including recommendations for the development of the new body.

Summary

The aim of the project was to facilitate consultations with relevant stakeholders and provide recommendations to assist in the development of a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and suicide prevention body.

Project aims

To complete this project, Karabena Consulting facilitated seven in-person workshops (SA, WA, Qld, NT, WA, Vic and national) with stakeholders including:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with lived experience

  • Primary Health Networks

  • governments

  • suicide-prevention and social and emotional wellbeing-related workforces.

Methodologies

The key outputs for this project were:

  • seven reports from each workshop including a thematic analysis of each

  • recommendations for the new body including governance, scope of activities, deliverables and other elements.

Outputs

As a result of this project, ‘Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia’ was established in March 2020.

This new national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and suicide prevention body is based on a proposal directly informed by the workshops we facilitated.
