St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Cultural Safety Audit

St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne

Who funded the project

St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) has contracted Karabena Consulting to undertake a multi-year cultural safety audit to explore the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and staff regarding cultural safety issues; and improve the cultural safety of the hospital’s services.

In the first year (2021-2022), Karabena Consulting:

  • Led an extensive ethics application process.

  • Undertook a policy and procedural review against a nationally benchmarked cultural audit tool developed internally where we identified gaps and opportunities that could support enhanced outcomes for SVHM’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, stakeholders and staff.

  • Partnered with a SVHM research team to conduct a review of 50 complaints made by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people between 2012 and 2021. The case study for the Historical Complaints Review can be found here.

In the second year (2022-2023) Karabena Consulting will:

  • Undertake a quantitative data analysis looking at cultural safety in Emergency Department settings.

  • Undertake a feasibility study looking at the implementation of cultural healing models of care at SVHM. The case study for the feasibility study can be found here.

  • Develop a culturally-safe complaints/feedback process (outcome from year 1 historical complaints review).

  • Develop First Nations specific resources on Trauma Informed Care.

  • Undertake qualitative patient research.

  • Develop a meta-policy (outcome from year 1 policy audit).

  • Develop content for 6 First Nations patient experience-focused policies (outcome from year 1 policy audit).
