St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Cultural Safety Audit
St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
Who funded the project
St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) has contracted Karabena Consulting to undertake a multi-year cultural safety audit to explore the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and staff regarding cultural safety issues; and improve the cultural safety of the hospital’s services.
In the first year (2021-2022), Karabena Consulting:
Led an extensive ethics application process.
Undertook a policy and procedural review against a nationally benchmarked cultural audit tool developed internally where we identified gaps and opportunities that could support enhanced outcomes for SVHM’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, stakeholders and staff.
Partnered with a SVHM research team to conduct a review of 50 complaints made by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people between 2012 and 2021. The case study for the Historical Complaints Review can be found here.
In the second year (2022-2023) Karabena Consulting will:
Undertake a quantitative data analysis looking at cultural safety in Emergency Department settings.
Undertake a feasibility study looking at the implementation of cultural healing models of care at SVHM. The case study for the feasibility study can be found here.
Develop a culturally-safe complaints/feedback process (outcome from year 1 historical complaints review).
Develop First Nations specific resources on Trauma Informed Care.
Undertake qualitative patient research.
Develop a meta-policy (outcome from year 1 policy audit).
Develop content for 6 First Nations patient experience-focused policies (outcome from year 1 policy audit).
