What to do this NAIDOC Week: Tips from Team Karabena Consulting

This year’s NAIDOC Week runs from 7-14 July. There are many ways to celebrate, including attending rallies, buying from First Peoples owned businesses, hosting events at your workplace, reading and listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, and attending some of the many public NAIDOC events in your town.

Here are our team’s tips for what they’re looking forward to this NAIDOC Week:

Kim

My 6 year old son and I love that NAIDOC falls in the school holidays because there are so many great family friendly events on! Like this Sand Art Workshop right near our office at Sunbury Library on Tuesday, 9 July.

David

It’s important to stay informed about the latest news and Aboriginal topics and issues. I thoroughly enjoy listening to Uncle Charles Pakana’s VAN Talks Podcast. It covers a range of issues with interesting guests involved in Aboriginal affairs, programs, and initiatives. The episodes are bite-sized, so catch up on the back catalogue during your commute to a NAIDOC event, to work, or during your walk!

Tess

I am super excited about the Koorie Heritage Trust’s NAIDOC Market! Held on Friday 12 July and Saturday 13 July in Federation Square, there will be a variety of stalls from incredible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned businesses. You’ll find Kim and I at the Ilan Style market stall, so make sure you stop by for a cuppa!

Sharon

I'm heading to the NAIDOC Week Family Day event at Melbourne Museum on Sunday July 7 to help celebrate the commencement of NAIDOC Week with events, performances and family activities. You can find more information here:  https://museumsvictoria.com.au/bunjilaka/whats-on/naidoc-week-family-day/

Kerry

We are working on the Living Libraries project with Australian Unity, with planned visits to different Aboriginal organisations to talk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about their lived experiences. This is a new initiative between Karabena and Karen Milward Consulting Services where people get the chance to experience cross cultural immersion training, Wayapa and meet with the community!
